Chelsea could still ask for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to freeze their transfer ban while they contest Fifa’s sanction after the club submitted their appeal without a request for such a stay earlier this week.

The court in Lausanne confirmed yesterday that Chelsea have lodged an appeal against Fifa’s decision to prevent them signing any new players for two transfer windows after being found guilty in February of breaching rules on 29 separate occasions with regard to the transfer of under-18 players.

Chelsea had previously appealed against Fifa’s judgment with the governing body, which was rejected in April, leaving them to turn to CAS as a last resort.
